9 Top Tips on How to Write a Bestselling Book

I’m so thrilled that my friend, the best-selling author and rather fabulous Dee Blick, has agreed to share some of her boundless wisdom to get us started on the road to a literary blockbuster. Sit back, enjoy… and send out a few early Christmas gifts by sharing it with your friends.

With the power to self publish at your fingertips it’s easy to write and publish a book nowadays. And if you’re willing to invest your time and energy creating a fantastic book and then marketing it with gusto – you could even have a bestseller on your hands.

Here are 9 top tips based on my own experience of writing three Amazon number one bestsellers and securing a publishing deal in China.

1. Nail your big idea. The central premise of your book. Scope it out and don’t worry if it’s been covered before. You have a unique author’s voice.

2. Spend time planning the content that will give your book real reader appeal. You probably have much of it already in your mind waiting to be mined. Do you have blogs, articles and case studies you can repurpose? Scoop up your content into one big ideas book.

3. Allocate your content to chapters so you can root out and improve the weaker ones. Some chapters will be packed with content. Make sure every single one is! Many of my readers take the time to write to me sharing their favourite chapter. I’m always relieved I’ve gone through this process beforehand!

4. Identify your readers. Who’s going to buy your book and why? Make a list of each different group. This is going to come in handy when you start marketing to these groups later on.

5. Use a professional editor to polish to your prose. They will root out the  clumsy grammar and spelling mistakes that we as authors never see no matter how many times we have combed through our manuscript.

6. Use a designer to create an irresistible book cover that sells your book. For example your front cover should include your title; any supporting strap line; a powerful testimonial; a few lines or words that explain how the reader will benefit from buying your book. The back cover should have some interesting information about you as an expert on the subject matter you are covering, a summary of the most appealing benefits that your book delivers and some more testimonials – all bound up in an attractive design that will look good online and in a book shop. If you’re keen on having a quirky title, consider a strap line that explains what your book is all about – in essence your big idea. When a potential reader is browsing online they may not delve any further if your title means nothing to them.

7. Price your book accurately. I’ve seen non-fiction books on Amazon that are no more than 100 pages and yet the author is charging £15. Look at the prices of similar books on Amazon to get a feel for what yours should be.

8. Start marketing your book from the moment you make the decision to start writing it. For example, you can tweet your progress and entertain your friends on Facebook with your writing progress. You can research the blogs, magazines, newspapers and journals read by your target audience and start building your media list so that when your book is published you can contact each one for reviews and send your press releases. You can also book public speaking engagements, set a date for your book launch and ask your networking buddies to spread the word. Do something positive every day to raise awareness of you and your book!

9. Be the tortoise, not the hare and commit to marketing your book for at least 12 months after it has been published.
